This chest is very unusual and would lend itself for bedroom use, or for music sheets as was possibly intended, or just to fill a difficult to fill space in the home with an ornate piece.
The chest stands on spade feet made on straight legs, and these are bridged on the front and sides by a decorative plinth.
The chest is a very dark mahogany and the drawers, as well as the top, are beautifully inlaid with satinwood banding that is a deep orange colour, which contrasts so well with the darker colour of the mahogany.
The six slide out drawers all work well and each has the original curved handles.

AN UNUSUAL VICTORIAN MAHOGANY SMALL SCOTTISH CHEST C1880
A very unusual Victorian mahogany Scottish chest of smaller than usual proportions, dating to c1880.
This type of chest is usually made in a taller form, and so this example represents an ideal opportunity to acquire one of this smaller size, and in excellent condition too.
The chest stands on ornate turned feet, and has a series of four slide out drawers, the upper one a blind one as always with this type of chest, and the lower three all having the original turned wooden handles, locks and turned wooden key plates.
We do not have a key to the chest, although one may be found fairly easily.
Again as usual with Scottish chest design, there is a decorative reeded vertical column either side of the lower three drawers, this beautifully carved top and bottom.
The chest has a magnificent colour to the mahogany with an attractive patina, and aged usage marks, with some aged drying out of the planked sides causing a small vertical gap on each end in the centre.
Otherwise the chest has no worm damage, and has the original back boards.
